Statement
Liana Grammenos uses broad depth of color and vivid brush strokes to create space between mind and matter, separating the viewer from the physical image to see through the eyes of the objective subconscious. Images and experiences are broken down into raw, simple forms, allowing the subconscious to compare the nuances of reality out of context, creating a sense of recognition where there is none. The audience is asked, what is real: the image of reality, or the interpretation? While we consciously attempt to reconstruct the image before us on one of Grammenos' grand canvases, we notice that we, too, are being watched; The eyes of the subconscious are peering out into our world, judging and analyzing us, extracting foreign images and shapes to compare with the deconstructed world within. Here we join an abstract organic collective, so familiar, yet without an identity.
